Sphynx cat care
This is the Sphynx cat care I do at my house. I will tell you the week I keep, the first-month mistake I see, and how I wash them. I will also tell you what I keep in the house for warmth, what you need to buy before pickup, and when I want you to call a vet instead of me.
The week I keep
Sphynx cat care is a rhythm at my house. It is not a big project. Mine comes down to three things. Nails, ears, and a bath.
People hear hairless and picture a spa day every weekend. That is not my week. I would rather show you the real one before you decide this is your cat.
Nails, about once a month
I trim nails about once a month. That is the rhythm that works for mine. Over a year that comes out to about twelve trims. It is a small job once you have done it a few times.
I do not declaw, and I do not place a kitten with someone who plans to. That is a no for me. Who they fit, and who they are wrong for.
Ears, about every two weeks
I do ears about every two weeks. Some of my cats need ears more often. That is the part people are surprised by.
I cannot hand you one ear schedule and promise it fits your cat. Ear upkeep follows the oil, and oil varies from cat to cat.
A bath, about once a month
I bathe about once a month. Oil varies from cat to cat. Some of mine take more upkeep when they run oilier.
I do not treat every cat the same week. I watch the oil and I adjust. The ones that run oilier get more of my time. The rest need less of it.
Why I do not hand out one schedule
Weekly baths, ears, and nails are part of life with them. Who they fit, and who they are wrong for.
Not all of mine are completely naked. Oil still varies. Why they are hairless. What each coat looks and feels like is on Sphynx cat coats.
Not a fit if you want a cat with no weekly upkeep at all. I would rather say that now than after you have picked out a kitten.

The first-month mistake
The first-month mistake I see is overbathing. People want to wash and wash. I get why. The skin looks like it needs a bath.
Less is better on the skin. I do not put lotions, oils, or creams on them. I bathe as needed.
That first-year habit matters. If you wash too often, you are fighting the oil instead of living with it.
Here is what I do instead. I watch the cat, not the calendar. When one of mine needs a bath, I can tell. Until then I leave the skin alone.
This is the one thing I push back on hardest with a new owner. It is also the easiest thing to fix. Doing less is the fix.
How I wash them
I do not use a special cat shampoo. Waterless shampoo works best for me.
I put it on a terrycloth glove. I do not use water. Then I dry them off.
That is the whole method. A glove, waterless shampoo, and a towel. There is no tub in it.
I know that is a shorter answer than you may expect. I would rather give you the version I actually use than a longer one I do not. I do not buy special products for their skin, because less on the skin is better.
I do the first bath later, while they are still with me. The first 12 weeks, as a timeline.
I got 2 cats from unfurgettable Sphynx!! They were full vaccinated and healthy kittens!! She bathed and cut their nails prior to being picked up. She was so helpful throughout the whole time and even after I picked up by two babies. They were litter trained and chipped! I would totally recommend getting a baby from her!!

Heat
I keep heated pet beds or blankets in different areas of the house. I keep the house at 76.
I do not set up one warm spot and call it done. I put them in more than one room so a cat has somewhere to go. Giving them the choice is the point.
My nursery is 78. That is my kitten room. It is not a number I ask every home to copy.
For clothes and big temperature changes, I wrote clothes and warmth. That page is also where I talk about the dryer.
Clothes are optional. I do not put clothes on mine.
Food

My cats are picky. Some will not eat canned. Those same cats love dry. I keep more than one kind so everyone eats. The details live on that page.
What you need at home
People ask me for a shopping list. Here is the honest version from my side of it.
I sell a litter box and litter. I do not sell clothes. I do not sell food bowls.
Bath supplies are something you purchase. Toys are too. What the kitten price includes.
An electric blanket is fine with me. A heated bed is fine too. I did not want you to guess about that one.
You need a carrier before you leave here with a kitten. I ask for that every time.
I also sell a starter pack separately, and I keep it simple. What is in the starter pack.
Vet care I ask for
I recommend spay or neuter at 6 months if it is not already done.
Every kitten I place is microchipped. You register that chip in your name after they go home.
I want regular vet care for general health. I do not tell you to go get heart scans. How I think about DNA, HCM, and skin.
Their shots are not finished on the day they leave me. What the price includes, and the shots that come after.
If something feels wrong
Call me about anything. Call a vet if they vomit, have diarrhea, seem lethargic, will not eat or drink, or feel too cold.
I mean anything. You are not bothering me. After they go home you can call, text, or email me anytime.
Those signs are the ones where I want a vet first and me second. Call the vet, then call me, and I will help however I can.
If you ever cannot keep the kitten, I ask that you bring it back to me. I would rather have that call than wonder.

Questions I get about Sphynx care
How often should I bathe a Sphynx cat?
About once a month at my house. Oil varies from cat to cat, so yours may want more or less than mine. If you are not sure, less is better.
Do I need a special Sphynx shampoo?
Not for me. I use waterless shampoo on a terrycloth glove, with no water.
How often do Sphynx ears need cleaning?

That is a no with me. A kitten should not be alone more than 2 to 4 hours on most days, unless there are other animals in the house. Who they fit, and who they are wrong for.
What do I need before pickup?
A carrier. I ask for that before you leave here with a kitten. Bath supplies and toys are yours to buy.
